Composer's Note
I’ve been repeatedly inspired by Circus Roncalli in the summers in Düsseldorf, where I live. The astounding performers, with their remarkable skills, have left an indelible impression – one I’ve tried to encapsulate in this panache-filled orchestral display. Just as the the circus performers dazzle with their talents, I’ve put the orchestra through their own hoops, asking them to showcase their talents.
The first movement, “Björn the Strong Man,” features a robust tuba solo that runs throughout. Unlike the typical stoic strong man circus routine, Björn exhibits a comical side, clowning around and detouring into self doubt before displaying his strength. The heft of our hero is mirrored in the deep, resonant low end of the orchestra.
“Ariane the Aerialist,” the second movement, is full of high flying virtuosity with spartan-few bass notes. Her dazzling performance culminates in a tightrope violin solo – a breathtaking display of balance and talent.
The third movement, “Mobius the Magician,” soars with melody, harmonic magic and sleight of hand, and orchestrational fantasy. He concludes his time on stage with his most dazzling disappearing act, or is it cutting the beautiful princess in half – you will have to decide for yourself.
Pouring my heart into this composition was a true joy. I believe it offers not only high entertainment but also depth and nuance for those who choose to look beyond the spectacle.
