Composer's Note
Exile Tunes is a set of three torch songs for solo singer and mixed chamber ensemble. The “Dog Days” depicts a listless summer malaise, where what should be pleasant and rewarding turns out to be tedious and unfulfilling. “Sing the Saddest Song” concerns the difficulties of making meaningful connections to others. The song pines about singing a sad, beautiful tune about love, but the singer is unsure of the song’s reception. “Superhero Wannabe” tells a tale rife with friction between a person’s self-aggrandised identity as a superhero and the painful reality of how they are perceived by others.
