My Song of Morning was composed at the request of violist Friederike Latzko as a memorial for her late friend, Hildegard Schwartz, who was also a violist. Originally a Trauerwerk for solo viola and string orchestra, this version for viola and piano maintains the work’s introspective focus, reflecting on the complex emotional states—anger, sadness, and grief—that arise in the process of mourning.
