Composer's Note
Songs from the Discovery for vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra is a musical setting of two poems by Wisława Szymborska that explore the complexities of human talent and exploration. Through the contrasting works “The Acrobat” and “Discovery,” listeners are invited to reflect on the grace and beauty of humanity, as well as the moral dilemmas arising from our collective, relentless pursuit of progress.
In “The Acrobat,” a solo tenor accompanied by orchestra celebrates the artistry and elegance of a single acrobat, described as “beautiful beyond belief.” This portrait of human achievement highlights the extraordinary heights of talent and creativity attainable by humankind.
“Discovery” offers a darker, more sobering perspective on human ingenuity. A baritone soloist narrates a story that examines the destructive power of technological advancement and the burden of responsibility it entails. The chorus adds emotional depth and dramatic weight, serving as the voice of the collective and embodying the moral complexities of humanity as a whole.
